Michael Carroll from Britain didn’t have an easy childhood. His father passed away when he was only 10 years old and he grew up with his mother who was often out of work and brought home different men some of which would beat Michael. What is more, Carroll was diagnosed with dyslexia and ADHD (Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) which led to him falling behind in his studies and by the time he graduated from high school Carroll was barely literate. When Carroll was 13 years old he was caught shoplifting and received a custodial sentence.
However, destiny had something else in mind for Carroll’s future. Back in 2002 then-19-year-old Carroll won the National Lottery and received $15.4 million. The boy, who was a part-time garbageman at the time, stated that he wouldn’t spend the money foolishly but just buy a house and invest the rest of it. Yet, what followed could hardly be described as “smart spending”. Carroll wasted huge sums of money on his numerous girlfriends, gambling, buying expensive cars and jewelry and generally just partying heavily. It took him just a little over 5 years to get back at square one and in 2008 Carroll applied for his old job as a garbageman. Surprisingly, Carroll stated that he didn’t regret spending lavishly his winnings as he “wasn’t made for the fancy life” according to his own words.
