A British family laid flowers on a complete stranger’s grave before they discovered the cemetery had made a mistake. Thomas Whelan from Liverpool passed away at the age of 70 in 2000 and his widow Kathleen and their daughter Eileen attended his grave every week since then.
The 82-year-old Kathleen Whelan passed away recently and while her saddened daughter was making arrangements for her mother to be buried in the family plot next to her father, she discovered Thomas Whelan had not been buried there at all. Instead, Eileen’s father was interred in an adjacent plot and the Whelan family were leaving flowers at the grave of a stranger, buried at the same time as Thomas, for nearly 13 years.
Being left in care of her parents’ graves as other family members moved away, Eileen expressed her deep sorrow after the truth came to light. She stated that despite having been against cremation for a long time, she had told her children she would like to be cremated one day to spare them the grief she went through.
