This fake Japanese dating website managed to make $80 million over the course of a single year!
When it comes to online dating you can never know who’s really sitting out there talking to you – how they look like and what type of person they are. Unfortunately, there are too many lonely and desperate people out there, who are willing to believe fake dating websites.
Fake Japanese dating websites have become so popular in recent years that the Japanese government has felt the pressure to start campaigns in order to prevent people from paying thousands a year for expensive memberships on such websites. The people standing behind these fake sites often hire several staff members to pose as millions and millions of fake members in order to make people pay just so they can date the fake members online. For example, one of these websites managed to make $80 million in USD (10 billion yen) back in 2012 over the course of a single year! The website allegedly had 2.7 million active users. In reality, there was only one single woman posing as millions of members. Such websites are known as “sakura websites”. One unnamed user didn’t realize he had signed up on such a website and he eventually ended up spending 13 million yen on membership fees in a desperate attempt to find a romantic partner.
The Japanese government has tried to outlaw these fake websites many times. One of their campaigns resembles the ads sakura websites post on the web. The government’s image, however, doesn’t state that you’ll find your one true love on a website. It says that the person from the picture cannot date you, simply because “she’s a sakura, after all”. Let’s just hope they manage to make a difference before other desperate people blow millions on memberships.
