Technology and medicine are advancing with paces which are truly remarkable for the 21st century we live in. Both scientists and technology engineers work side by side to provide people with disabilities unique life-changing devices. Recently, this new video of an infant hearing for the first time thanks to a special auditory brain stem implant emerged.
The boy’s name is Alex Frederick and he was prematurely born deaf. He’s currently just 17-months-old and has never heard the voices of his loving family until now. Alex had endured a 5.5 hour long brain surgery in which he had a special microchip implanted in his brain stem. Now with the usage of electrical stimulation Alex’s brain can recognize and process sound. Alex’s mother wanted the very first thing her son hears to be the voices of his sisters, but Alex did not react at first when the device was turned on. Luckily the Alex looked up when he obviously heard and noticed the banging of keys on a table next to him. A happy moment indeed.
