Cher Ami (French for “Dear Friend”) was a carrier pigeon who served during WW I. At that time, the two-radio message transmitting was not yet available so carrier pigeons were often used. They brought messages across the battle field in small canisters attached to their legs.
Cher Ami flew several crucial missions to deliver messages in the Fall of 1918. During an especially hard battle for the American soldiers against the Germans, Cher Ami managed to fly 25 miles in only 25 minutes, thus bringing reinforcement and saving more than 200 American lives. The little bird succeeded even though it was badly injured while exposed to enemy fire. As the American soldiers were combating to help the French army, when the latter learned about Cher Ami’s feat, they awarded the bird with a medal ‘Croix de guerre’ (French for ‘War Cross’) .
