Xiao Zheng, a student in the Anhui province of China, wanted to have an iPhone and an iPad so much, that he went to some extreme lengths to get them.
The teenager sold his kidney for $3400 in order to make the purchase. The man who bought the kidney is still being searched for by the government. Management of the hospital, in which the surgery took place, stated that they didn’t know anything about the case or about the man to whom Zhehg sold his kidney.
After Zheng had the surgery and bought himself the tech toys, he started ailing renal deficiency. Doctors have stated that the boy is going to need a transplant himself but, given his financial status, he won’t be able to pay for it.
After Zheng’s case Chinese authorities took measurements to prevent more cases like it. The government managed to charge five people in Central China for being involved in illegal organ trading, but Zheng’s kidney buyer vanished into thin air.
Now take a moment to think about what tech toys do to us nowadays and how we have become so dependent on them that we are willing to risk our own health just to have the latest thing in our possession.
