Arnold Abbott, a 90 year old man from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, US, has been feeding homeless people for the past two decades. He was feeding some homeless earlier this November, when he was spotted by the police and arrested alongside two local pastors – Mark Sims and Dwayne Black. The three men received charges for violating the law.
The city of Fort Lauderdale has a law prohibiting people from feeding the homeless unless they can offer them some sort of toilet facilities. Since the men were unable to do so, they faced criminal charges. Mr. Abbott believes the law in question is absolutely outrageous, because there’s nothing wrong with feeding “the poorest of the poor”. Back in 1999 he sued the city for the very same reason and won the case. Now he’s preparing to do the same.
According to Fort Lauderdale’s mayor, Jack Seiler, the three men were indeed breaking a law. He claims that homeless people are less likely to seek help and get a grip of their lives if they are fed and looked after.
