On an incredible Christmas morning back in 2002 Andrew Jackson “Jack” Whittaker, Jr. suddenly became the lucky Powerball lottery winner. He won the staggering jackpot of $314.9 million. This was the biggest jackpot ever won by a single person holding a winning ticket from the American lottery. Subsequently, Jack took the cash option for claiming his prize money and he got $13,386,407 after tax deduction.
He gave away 10% of his jackpot to different Christian charities, opened a non-profit organization that provides food and clothes to the poor and even bought a $123,000 home to the woman he purchased the winning ticket from. It’s safe to say the lucky winner did his fair share of good deeds.
Unfortunately, his personal life did not improve at all after winning such a humongous jackpot. Whittaker was already worth $17 million due to the fact he was the CEO of a contracting firm in West Virginia. He wished he had never won the jackpot because the money only cursed his life. After the big win he had a handful of problems with the judicial system as well as a number of personal tragedies. His granddaughter’s boyfriend passed away in a tragic accident in his home after illegal substance abuse. Then a couple of months later his granddaughter was found dead as well. Mr Whittaker got robbed a few times and at one point even his bank accounts were emptied by criminals.
All in all, Whittaker wished he had thorn the winning ticket because it only brought him misery.
