From an extremely early age we learn some astronomy basics, such as the name of our galaxy, the connection between the Earth and the Moon, and as the fact that the biggest star in the Milky Way – the Sun – does not revolve around our planet.
However, it appears that many people disagree with the latter. The NSF conducted a study back in 2012 and asked 2,200 people living in the US a number of astronomy questions. The results showed that 26% of the people that took part in the survey thought the Sun revolved around our planet and not the other way around. The study also showed that only 39% of the surveyed participants answered correctly that the universe originated after a massive explosion known as the Big Bang.
Back in 2005 a similar survey was conducted in Europe and only 66% of the participants answered correctly.
