Debbie Stevens, 47, was fired by her boss even though she did such an amazing thing : she donated her kidney to a complete stranger. The divorced mother of two did the selfless act just to help her boss move up on the waiting list.
Debbie spent some time living in Florida but returned to New York to visit her daughter. It was then when she met 61-year-old Jackie Brucia, a controller for Atlantic Automotive Group. The high-ranking employee of the million-dollar dealership operator shared information about her condition and Debbie said without even thinking that, if anything happened, she would be glad to help Brucia.
A few months later Debbie moved back to Long Island, New York and asked Jackie Brucia if there were any job openings. Brucia hired her in a few weeks. It wasn’t long after Debbie started working for Brucia when the latter called Debbie in her office and asked whether she was serious about the donorship. Debbie confirmed and proceeded to being tested but it turned out she wasn’t compatible with Brucia. Even though she was not a perfect match, Debbie agreed to donate her kidney to a complete stranger, so that Brucia would move up on the waiting list.
But after the operation took place and Debbie returned to work, Brucia started threating her really badly, constantly screaming at her for no reason and eventually demoting her. Debbie got so stressed and was feeling so bad that she consulted a specialist regarding her condition. After speaking with an attorney, Debbie sent a letter to the Atlantic Automotive Group company explaining the situation. She was fired within a week.
Debbie stated that she agreed to donate her kidney simply because “that’s who she is and because she didn’t want Brucia to die” but, apparently, the latter hired her with an ulterior motive.
Debbie’s attorney, Lenard Leeds, stated that they are planning to file a lawsuit against AAG and seek compensation for the psychological damages caused to his client due to the harassment as well as for discrimination because of her condition.
