Juan Catalan spent half a year in an LA jail after he was falsely accused for the murder of Martha Puebla. Puebla was shot down in front of her home by four men as described by witnesses. One of them pointed Catalan as a participant in the murder.
The police arrested him because they made a conclusion that could’ve given Catalan a motive to kill Puebla. She had given testimony in a case against Catalan’s brother. Catalan himself stated that during the attack he had been at Dodger Stadium watching a game with his daughter. The tickets he had didn’t prove his alibi to the court.
His attorney, Todd Melnik, was determined to prove Catalan’s innocence. After he couldn’t find Catalan’s face in the footage from the game, he remembered that an HBO crew had been filming the series “Curb Your Enthusiasm” near the stadium that day. Melnik couldn’t find Catalan’s face on the director’s cut episode either. But Catalan and his daughter appeared in an outtake scene.
The court finally released Catalan and he had to thank the HBO series he had never even watched before! After hearing about the turnout of Catalan’s case, the star of the HBO show Larry David stated that he would quit his acting career and “devote his life to freeing wrongly imprisoned people”.
