One judge fell asleep while he was in the middle of a rape trial.
Have you ever wondered what the most inappropriate moment to fall asleep at is? Is it during an exam? Is it behind the wheel? Or is it while you’re serving as a judge during a rape trial? The latter one is actually a real thing!
According to official reports, one rape trial had to be abandoned after the judge, who was on top of it, fell asleep during an extremely important moment of the trial. John Quigley, the man, who was being trialed, was supposed to sit through the 5 day long case while a number of victims testified against him. However, the case collapsed.
A 65 year old then-respected barrister had taken over the role of the judge in the rape trial. Unfortunately, while one of the victims was giving her testimony, the man dozed off in front of the eyes of the jury and the rest of the people in the court room. Since the victim wasn’t of the full legal age, she had to give her testimony remotely through a video link. Her family, however, were present at the trial and witnessed as the judge fell asleep on the job. The 65 year old judge was later confronted for his actions. As it turned out, he had missed one of the focal points of the testimony, thus, it was labeled as inadequate.
The girl in question, who was testifying against John Quigley, was one of two victims, who had been abused by him between 2006 and 2013. The case was abandoned earlier in 2014. It’s expected that the case will be re-listed and the girls will have to testify once again. Let’s hope this time the judge doesn’t fall asleep!
