There are so many random facts and figures out there, but we’ve got another 18 priceless pieces of information which you can bring up at the next dinner party you’re at, and you’ll blow some minds!
1. Wasps have killed over 200 people just by bringing down commercial airline flights.
The Mud Dauber is the name of a species of wasps, and amazingly, their nests are built from mud! However, they are vicious wasps, and they have ruined an air speed indicator in a passenger plane, by building their nest in the tubes which causes it to not work, causing a crash.
Then, in 1996, another flight crashed after the wasp got into a similar tube and built its nest there! In that flight, almost 200 people died.
So wasps are more dangerous than they first seem.
2. Footprints etched into floor by a devout monk.
After kneeling for prayers around 1000 times a day for 20 years, this Chinese monk’s footprints have been etched into the wooden floor. That just seems impossible!
3. One tree is an entire forest.
Whilst this Pando tree looks as though it’s an entire forest made of thousands of single trees, these 4700 aspen, are actually all one tree, sharing one common root. The forest has been given the nickname ‘The Trembling Giant’.
4. Mexican scientists turned tequila into diamonds.
It was at the National Autonomous University that they found out they could make some ultra thin diamonds made from acetone and ethanol. In particular, the mix they came up with was 60% water to 40% alcohol, and this is a very similar content to the Mexican’s favourite drink, Tequila.
5. A Beagle called 911 to save their owner.
The VITA Wireless Samaritan Award is a prestigious award in the US, and after her owner had collapsed, the Beagle, called Belle, got to her owner’s phone and dialled 911 to save her life. This type of animal has such a great sense of smell, they can smell differences in someone’s blood sugar level, and tell when it’s not right. This dog almost certainly saved her owner’s life.
